Freedom Adventure Academy

How we’ll build our

Strong Community Culture

  • Team Building

Florida Freedom Family spends 200 hours together so we know each other well before forming our tribes.

To encourage time spent together as a community, we’ll invite all the families to spend the weekend before school starts together hanging out while doing team building exercises as a group!

We’ll also spend our first six weeks of the school year doing lots of team building exercises in each workshop and across the entire school.

  • Family Meetings

FFF’s goal is to be full of families with strong missions and great meetings that are known for sticking together through thick and thin.

We’ll bring that culture into the academy with morning meetings and proven strategies for conflict resolution; with the flexibility of a family that’s ready to forge their way through this adventurous life while having fun together!

  • Badges & Quests

FFF works towards goals in badges and quests and we’ll be bringing that culture into this school.

The first badge families work on is creating their family mission statement and then they’re invited to begin their own quests. We’ll post these statements and quests publicly so we can all cheer each other on and help each other along the way of our family’s Hero’s Journey…which takes us to….

Our Self-Directed Learners

  • Their Own Hero's Journey

We’ll show our children that following their unique purpose’s path is the most fulfilling way to do life. They are each on their own hero’s journey and their life will be what they make of it.

Their studies will focus on building their own self-driven ‘tool box’ so they’re ready to continue their life-long learning challenge when they join the adult ranks.

  • Socratic Circles

Lack of critical thinking is part of the problems that we’re facing today as our freedoms have been stripped from us. We’ll bring this back via our own daily Socratic Circles that will have our learners exercising empathy while reading deeply & thinking outside the box.

  • Project Based Quests

The school will revolve around six week quests that will stretch our learners to dive deep into subjects they’re passionate about as they embark on solving problems or working apprenticeships that will prepare them to solve big problems that change the world, for the better.

This sounds great, but how is it executed?

Elementary

Level

Our mixed ages elementary workshop will encourage younger and older learners to work well together and learn from each other. We’ll be using either proven homeschool curriculum or an online type tutoring service to get through ‘core’ work, in two hours or less, in the mornings via gamification. The afternoons will be for quest work or expanded learning in a story based method with lots of brain breaks that are full of fun movement that they love! Our goal is for your kiddos to LOVE learning!

Middle

School

Ahhh middle school, when puberty hits and the brain becomes totally different! So many educators since before Socrates have been left in awe after spending time with this age and their brains!
We’ll continue using either proven homeschool curriculum or an online type tutoring service to get through ‘core’ work via gamification in two hours during the mornings in their mixed ages workshop. The afternoons will be for quest work, outdoor life lessons, or apprenticeships so their brains get the attention they need to still stay focused on their Hero’s Journey!
Once we see they’re maturing and getting ready for the high school level workshop, they’ll embark on a seven step rite of passage and will be welcomed into adulthood. This rite of passage will be customized based on each family and child. The academy is here to be the support through it and for celebrating our newest young adults!

High

School

It’s time to get ready to launch these teenagers into adulthood!
We’ll continue using either proven homeschool curriculum or an online type tutoring service to get through ‘core’ work in the mornings via gamification. The only difference will be that core work will take about three hours each day.
Science labs will be hands on and quests will begin to evolve into longer apprenticeships, starting their own businesses, or even just studying for college entrance exams.

Each spring we’ll partner with the Children’s Entrepreneur Market for one evening where your children will need to develop a product or service and sell it at the market!

Even More Information

Some things below are subject to change as we go through the process of creating a school/academy.

  • Our goal is to begin middle to late August and run in six week quests. At the end of every six weeks students will present their work in a school wide forum that evening and then take 1-2 weeks off. We’ll be back after that for another six week quest with the school year ending mid to late June.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility for family time that homeschoolers have with the structure of a school supporting your child’s learning journey.

  • Our current plan is for the daily morning meeting to begin promptly at 9am. You can drop off children anytime after 8:40am and pick them up at 3:15pm.

  • The classrooms will have mixed ages of learners that will resemble more of an artist’s studio or workshop. Each student will have his or her own desk space with lots of mixed use space.

Elementary aged, middle school aged, and high school aged will each have their own workshop and we will not accept more than 36 students per workshop space.

Each workshop space will have an adult mentor who will help facilitate socratic circles, morning and afternoon meetings, conflict resolution, and project goal setting.

  • Elementary & Middle:
9am: Socratic Circle then the morning meeting. 9:30 - 11:30am is spent on their ‘core work’ like reading, writing, and math. An hour for lunch & play. Then from 12:30pm - 2:30pm they work on their quest project. Brain breaks through the day are highly encouraged and most work will be done in 18 - 25 minute increments so no one is overwhelmed. By 3pm their workshop needs to be clean for their afternoon meeting and then parent pick up!

    High school:
9am: Morning meeting. 9:15am - 12:15pm ‘core work’ (like reading, writing, science, math) is done. An hour for lunch and play. Then Socratic Circle and working on your quest project until 2:40pm. Clean up from 2:40 - 3pm for the afternoon meeting at 3 and parent pick up at 3:15!

  • As we update with more information, we will have a form for parents to fill out. Once the form is filled out, we’ll go over it. If your family looks like an awesome founding family, we’ll ask the parents to read two books and then we’ll meet with the whole family for their final interview.

  • While we respect all religions, we’ll only be covering religion in respect to world religions and how Western Christianity influenced our founding fathers and our current culture.

Libertarianism does not fall into the left or right narrative. We’ll be encouraging students to live by the Golden Rule and the Silver Rule (Don’t hurt people, and don’t take their stuff.), anything else that takes a hard left or right stance in our current culture is up to parents to address at home.

  • Right now our estimates are showing we’ll be charging around $7,300/child in the elementary/middle school ages and around $9,000/child in the high school ages.

We will be working to accept the Step Up homeschool or private school scholarship.

  • The Hero’s Journey your children will embark on in our academy will require them to have the ability to self-direct much of their education. Unfortunately, we have no professional training or expertise in this area. Children who need a great deal of individualized attention would not thrive here.

  • We’ll need a minimum of 15 children to start the school. If more people are interested in homeschool pods for the first year than a school, we’ll need a minimum of 20 children.

  • Our homeschool pods will be connected to the school with all children following the same schedule for projects and breaks. The only difference will be that homeschoolers will come in three days a week and microschoolers will be in session five days a week. Tuition will be slightly less for homeschool pod families.

  • No.

Families are already stressed enough, your evenings are for family time. Go enjoy your kiddos!

  • Mastery > Grades. Our badge system will encourage children to actually master their work before moving on.
